William Konkin Elementary School (WKE) is nestled in the community of Burns Lake and serves approximately 200 students in kindergarten to grade seven. The school community is proud to offer French Immersion, English and Carrier. The Nations surrounding and including the Burns Lake area of the school district are: Lake Babine Nation, Burns Lake Band, Wet’suwet’en First Nation, Nee Tahi Buhn Band, Skin Tyee First Nation and Cheslatta Carrier Nation.
WKE has an active Parent Advisory Council (PAC) that spearheads a variety of events and programs for the school. The hot lunch program is delivered to participating students every Thursday and is a highlight of the week! A sample of additional PAC sponsored events include the annual pancake breakfast during the Winter Carnival and a Picnic on the Hill in June. Every month, a PAC meeting takes place in the school library and babysitting is provided free of charge. Parents are always welcome to drop by the school for a visit, lend a helping hand at an event and/or attend a PAC meeting.
The staff at WKE is committed to ensuring a quality program that is focused on literacy and is student-centered. The primary learners are working hard to develop their writing competency using the Writers Workshop program. To support their reading fluency and comprehension, primary students are engaged in daily play-based literacy centers.
On behalf of the staff at WKE, I would like to welcome all students to an exciting 2019-2020 school year! By working together, the staff and students achieve high levels of learning.
